Trends and Issues: The Impact of Learning Objects

Back to Project Index | High-level Project Matrix | Project Documents

In this course we had an overview of current trends and issues that shape the practice of instructional technology in diverse settings. Topics included roles for instructional designers and learning technologists; professional competencies; contexts for practice; historical foundations of the field; and emerging theories and technologies that will shape future practice.

In this group project, created for Professor Brent G. Wilson and Chuck Ferguson's IT 6750: Current Trends and Issues in Instructional Technology class, our team determined that the need to take classroom-based instruction, materials, and information to create a low-cost, high quality instruction in a web-based format has given way to the concept of Learning Objects (LOs). The paper presents the trends and issues related to how instructional designers use LOs in their training courses and how that affects the learners.

This project meets the following competencies:

Reflective Practice

1. Take a systems view.

This project fulfills this competency because we were able to understand the context of our project from the gathered information of our research. We were then able to create the research paper and online website to showcase our results. We collaborated as a team to plan out what we wanted to research and how we would organize the material. We broke the topics up between the two of us after we finalized the direction that our trends and issues research would go. I also created an online website of our paper, which helped with our presentation of our topic on LOs in class.

2. Use cycles of reasoning as tools for problem-solving.

This project fulfills this competency by allowing us to use the cycles of reasoning as a way to problem-solve solutions in creating the research paper and website. Through our research we evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of using LOs and made recommendations for future use of LOs. The results of our evaluation is detailed in the The Impact of Learning Objects Paper and our website. Throughout the project, we worked as a team to decide what materials to include and how to best present our topic in the paper and in our presentation for the class.

3. Promote collaboration, partnerships, and relationships for full inclusion with stakeholders, clients, subject matter experts, team members, etc.

We collaborated with each other, our classmates, and teachers in this project. Additionally, we did extensive research on LOs to investigate how the experts use and discuss LOs. The results of our evaluation is detailed in the The Impact of Learning Objects Paper and our website.

4. Be a lifelong learner and professional.

This project fulfilled this competency by allowing me to further develop my ColdFusion skills, management skills, and my Research skills. I have used many of the skills learned in this project in my job and my web design business.

Design & Develop

9. Design learning and performance products and resources that reflect an understanding of the diversity of learners and groups of learners.

In the creation of the research paper, we considered the research information we gathered and analyzed and incorporated strategies to help guide our recommendations and research approach. The analysis is detailed in the The Impact of Learning Objects Paper and our website.

10. Develop products and resources to support learning and performance.

In the design of our website, we added resources that each of us found to help support the learning of LOs within our research paper. One link that I found was to a prototype called Exploring Adaptive Learning Objects. Also, throughout our paper and website we provided links to various examples that help support the users learning about the different uses of LOs.

Evaluate & Assess

13. Utilize research methods to investigate a learning or performance problem, issue, or trend.

We used the results of our research to make changes and improve the recommendations for using LOs. We collaborated as a team to come up with the recommendations. The results of our evaluation is detailed in the The Impact of Learning Objects Paper and our website.

Management

16. Employing effective strategies (e.g., team leadership, collaboration, accountability).

This project required several management skills that included project management, and the delivery of our analysis, and recommendations found in our paper. In addition, there was the delivery of the website. Another area of management was the scheduling of my time for the parts of the project I created.
