In the Adult Learning and Education course our class surveyed theories and principles of adult learning and adult education with an emphasis on practical applications and design of programs of instruction for adult learners. The final project met criteria in three areas of the ILT competencies.

In the final project, created for Professor Kim Peterson's EPSY 5220 – Adult Learning and Education class, I studied the theories and principles of adult learning and adult education with an emphasis on practical applications and design of programs of instruction for adult learners. The project includes a definition of adult learning, the observation of situated adult learning, a report on adult learning, the defined adult learning needs, and a prescription for adult learning.

This project meets the following competencies:

Reflective Practice

1. Take a systems view.

This project fulfills this competency because as I was able to understand the context of my project from the gathered information of my research and by analyzing the data from the survey and email interview that I conducted. I was then able to prescribe an overall situated adult learning solution from understanding how the research and data fit together with my overall conclusions of how adult learning occurs.

2. Use cycles of reasoning as tools for problem-solving.

This project fulfills this competency by allowing me to use the cycles of reasoning as a way to problem-solve solutions for my situated adult learning prescription. I performed action research by observing adult learning, researching adult learning, and then evaluating the results of these methods, as well as, the results of the survey and email interview. In the conclusion of my paper, there is a summative evaluation explaining the reasoning of the prescription for situated adult learning that I proposed.

3. Promote collaboration, partnerships, and relationships for full inclusion with stakeholders, clients, subject matter experts, team members, etc.

This project fulfills this competency as I observed three classes of adult learning, conducted two surveys and an email interview to gather insight into the students and teacher that I observed. The interview with the teacher allowed me to have a subject matter expert's opinion the style of teaching he used and why the students reacted to the teaching the way they did in class. The collaboration that I had with the teacher and the class gave me greater insight into how I approached my project.

4. Be a lifelong learner and professional.

This project fulfills this competency as I was introduced to and used new adult learning theories that I had never known about prior to this class project. The intricacies of situated adult learning or authentic learning have inspired me to use these type of strategies in my future teaching opportunities. When students are active in the learning, they retain more of the learning.

Planning & Analysis

5. Conduct a needs assessment for learning or performance interventions.

This project fulfills this competency as I observed the students and teacher in the class, as well as, conducted a survey of the students and an email interview of the teacher. By using these methods I was able to analyze and obtain data to determine the observed learning needs section of my paper.

6. Conduct a learning or performance instructional analysis.

This project fulfills this competency as I conducted an analysis and observation of the class, research of experts, and used critical thinking methods to design the prescription for situated adult learning in my paper.

Design & Develop

8. Apply various theories/strategies and current research, and consider local needs and constraints to design activities and experiences for learning.

This project fulfills this competency as I applied authentic learning and strategies from my research to the prescription for situated adult learning in my paper. I considered the observed student's needs and the teacher's style as I considered how to approach the prescription for situated adult learning in my paper.

9. Design learning and performance products and resources that reflect an understanding of the diversity of learners and groups of learners.

This project fulfills this competency as in the prescription for situated adult learning I created learning activities that took into account the various diversities of the students. The prescription for situated adult learning in my paper directed the learners to find their learning style and then to create a learning contract that would allow them to develop a sense of ownership in the learning process.
